Transport Layer Security and Secured Sockets Layer

TLS protocol stack

Secured Sockets Layer (SSL)

The SSL protocol was originally developed by Netscape. The Version 1 of SSL was never released.  Version 2 (SSL 2.0) was released in 1994 but had well‐known security vulnerabilities which led to release of   version 3 (SSL 3 0) in 1995.During this timeframe, Microsoft released a protocol known as Private Communications Technology (PCT), and later released a higher performance protocol known as the Secure Transport Layer Protocol (STLP). PCT and STLP couldn’t compete with SSL 2 and 3.

The rise of Transport Layer Security (TLS)

The IETF standards track Transport Layer Security Protocol Version 1.0 (TLS 1.0) emerged and was codified by the IETF as [RFC2246]. While TLS 1 0. is based on SSL 3 0., and the differences between them are not dramatic, they are significant enough that TLS 1.0 and SSL 3.0 do not interoperate. However, TLS 1.0 does incorporate a mechanism by which a TLS 1 0. Implementation can negotiate to use SSL 3.0 with requesting entities as if TLS were never proposed.

TLS Introduction

TLS is a protocol created to provide authentication, confidentiality and data integrity between two communicating applications. TLS is an IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) standard for communicating e‐mail securely. Many web browsers and server applications rely on secure SSL and TLS communications. SSL and TLS are frameworks that include cryptographic protocols which are intended to provide secure communications on the Internet.

Transport Layer Security (TLS)

TLS is based on a precursor protocol called “The Secure Sockets Layer Version 3.0” (SSL 3 0). and is considered  to be an improvement to SSL 3.0. Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a cryptographic protocol that is designed to provide both security and data integrity for communications over a reliable transport protocol such as Transport Control Protocol (TCP). TLS allows client-server applications to communicate across a public network while preventing eavesdropping, tampering, and message forgery by providing endpoint authentication and confidentiality over the Internet.

The goals of the TLS protocol, in order of priority, are cryptographic security, interoperability,

extensibility, and relative efficiency. TLS is designed to be application protocol independent. TLS protocol consists of two main components: Handshake protocol, to set session states and shared private keys, and Record protocol, to transmit data securely using the shared keys.

Handshake Protocol

The cryptographic parameters of the session state are produced by the Handshake Protocol. The TLS Record Protocol will then resume the connection between the two parties. In the Handshake protocol, both parties acknowledge their protocol versions, agree on cryptographic and compression algorithms, optionally authenticate each other through certificates, and use public-key encryption techniques to generate shared private keys.

Record Protocol

Now the client and the server are ready to communicate securely using the key block as a set of security parameters obtained by the Handshake protocol. The Record protocol takes data to be transmitted in one endpoint, fragments the data into manageable blocks, compresses the data, applies a MAC, encrypts by block cipher, and transmits the result. Received data is then decrypted, verified, decompressed, reassembled, and then delivered to higher-level application on the other endpoint. In short, Record protocol ensures that the connection is private via symmetric encryption by session unique keys and reliable via integrity check.

CISSP – Tips and Tricks

For those of you pursuing your CISSP certification, I would like to offer another tip today to win this battle and pass your CISSP:

Make a Study Plan

This exam is mile wide and inch deep. Study all the topics and understand them. I suggest not to dig deep or else you would not be able to complete all 10 domains.

Secondly , If you can , do attend a boot camp . The advantage of attending a boot camp is that you are able to go through all the topics in Four or Five days.

CISSP – Tips and Tricks

For those of you pursuing your CISSP certification, I would like to offer up  one tip today to win this battle and pass your CISSP:

PRACTICE QUESTIONS

You’re probably scoffing and wondering “how in the name of Sandeep do I select the best answer?” Unfortunately, there is no easy way of explaining how to choose the best answer. My advice? Do as many practice questions and simulated exams as you can. Study the wording of questions as they often provide hints and clues. You have to answer 250 multiple choice questions, so be sure to work your mental endurance up to the state where you can answer all those questions in one sitting.
